Purely Organics

About Purely Organic Purely Organic is a family business run by Eleanor & Tony Free which was started in 1998. When the business first started it was a home delivery organic Vegetables box business which has grown through shops in Frome Devizes & Bath to the Organic Trout Farm & Shop in Longbridge Deverill, Warminster Wiltshire.

The business first gained recognition when it won the Gold prizes in the Green Apple awards for services to the environment in April 2002. later that year Purely Organic won the national Small food producer of the year award with Trout, Smoked Trout & Pate. In 2003 Rick Stein named Purely Organic as the Best Producer of Trout in the UK and the Independent Newspaper selected Purely Organic as One of the Top Ten Best Food Producers in the Country.

Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall said on the Radio 4 Food Programme that Purely Organic’s Trout were better than any he had tasted and Purely Organic is listed in the list of 200 Good Food producers on the BBC Website.

Rick Stein with Tony FreeThe water which supplies the farm rises as crystal clear springs enriched with the minerals that trout relish and is estimated to have been underground for over 400 years. The water passes through organic watercressbeds where it picks up a range of live food including 3 types of freshwater shrimp which thrive naturally in the cress.

The water is rich with food when it reaches the fish and they obtain around 90 percent of their dietary requirements from the water. The remainder of their diet is from organic vegetable pellets. The main difference between organic trout and non organic trout, including Rainbow Trout that are caught in rivers, is that they are normal male and female fish. Rainbow Trout in rivers are neutered and stocked when young having often been given antibiotics as a preventative. The organic mixed sex fish enjoy a more natural life which shows in their quality and taste.
